Hair Dilemmas

After a bit of a lock chop this summer, my hair is now well on its way to being the lions mane I was sporting last Christmas. I’ve actually hit an all time record of four haircuts this year *pats self on back* and my hair almost has a mind of its own again now. So why is this post called hair dilemmas if I’ve got healthy, happy hair? Because I’m bored. We’ve all been there, needing a change, whether it’s fringes, layers or chopping so much hair off you could make a wig out of it. Whatever the style, there are a few rules I go back to to stop the post hairdresser blues:

Remember what suits you: Does wavy hair make your face look super round, or a sleek straight style too long? Different cuts work better with different face shapes and hair styles. With my everlasting love of sleek, straight hair, I’ve taken to asking for a more blunt chop. The length at the front falls better around my face and somehow makes the contours of my face more prominent and works with my fairly minimalist style. An Alexa Chung bob and waves (which I regularly dream about) will do the opposite and looks rather out of place with the usual Suzie uniform *sadface*.

Hair type: I have quite fine hair, which isn’t overly thick, so trawling through Pinterest, looking at models with extensions in or super thick hair isn’t going to help my hairdresser. My fine hair also means that a good fringe is really hard to achieve for me, as I have to use so much hair that the rest looks even thinner. Thick haired girls can opt for super thick fringes. But if I decide to take the plunge, it will be a longer, more wispy chop. For real hair inspiration it’s good to look at more street style and everyday photos (Tumblr is my favourite for this) over editorial shots – even over those in hair magazines.

If in doubt: Don’t do anything drastic. Instead of running to my hairdresser the second I got bored, I decided to switch up the products I was using on my hair. It made enough of a difference to keep the emergency scissors at bay and took my mind off a choppy bob and fringe for a while. It actually inspired me so much that things are going to be getting a bit hair orientated on the blog from Sunday onwards…

Every day is a hair dilemma for me. So I've stuck to the standard straight or wavy for as long as I can remember!

Is your hair naturally straight? If so, whats your process for getting those pretty waves?

You have beautiful hair! I think the tip about working with what you've got rather than trying to go against the grain is really important. I have RIDICULOUSLY thick hair that grows like weeds and certain styles just won't work for me. Much better to go for something that suits your hair than spend everyday battling with the GHDs. πŸ™‚

Awwww I love this post I always get so fed up with my really thick and unmanageable hair and sometimes wish I had hair that was less high maintenance but I suppose I should just embrace the lions mane haha! Xxxxx

hi Suzie, your hair is truly stunning!! I know exactly what you mean, I get bored of my hair way too easily and it gets so tempting to just chop and change it and be done with it. I did this a few years ago and it has thankfully grown back again now because it really did not suit my face shape! I love your hair straight and the blunt cut really suits you πŸ™‚

It's so hard to switch up my hairstyle because mine is so curly and frizzy. I've had medium length hair for the longest time. But my hair is more manageable these days after trying out more of the high end products, so I'm planning to grow it out.

Currently I'm lusting after Jennifer Lawrences hair both short and shoulder length but kedp reminding myself my hair is super straight and won't look like that!

I think you could totally pull off a 'lob'

Another thing to consider is that adding color changes dimension, texture, etc. Coloring hair with bleach will damage it — which can help add volume for fine, flat, straight haired girls (like me) while coloring hair without can add shine but can add weight.

    Thanks for sharing your tips!

I really need a hair change, too and I have the constant urge to just take a pair of scissors and chop it off. I used to have sideswept bangs for way too long and I am growing them out now. That's a very long and annoying undertaking *le sigh* I used to have a bob and I am thinking about chopping my hair again and getting straight bangs this time. I do have straight, thin hair so I am still contemplating whether that style would look great or plain horrific on me haha. Well, we'll see. Maybe I will take that plunge next year πŸ˜‰
