Packing for a weekend away has been one of my biggest fails in the past. You know how it is, you get your packing game face on and tell yourself you’re only going away for a weekend, so you won’t need that much. But a skin care routine and makeup bag later you have a bag just for these alone and nowhere to hold the million other things on your packing list.
Last week I kissed my packing fails of the past goodbye and took a real good look at what I needed in my routine and figured out where and how I could downsize:
Mini/sample products: Take a look at your sample selection – is there anything that can work as a substitute for a product in your routine? The Estée Lauder ANR eye cream isn’t my first choice but is much smaller than my current eye cream choice. It’s also a good excuse to test out a new product! Having minis of products you already own (I’m looking at you ANR serum) is perfect too if you’re the kind of girl who doesn’t want to break her routine too much.
Compact products: Hydraluron aand the La Roche Posay Anthelois AC are both extremely handy when you don’t have much space. Their packaging is quite sleek and they fitted perfectly into the flat, clear case pictured above.
Multi use products: have a moisturiser that works both evening and morning? Pack it. Pack it now! Even if you don’t decant the products, one is most certainly more travel friendly than two. This goes for cleansers and toners too. Also assess whether you really need something. Yes face masks are lovely, but will always be there waiting once you arrive home.
Empty products: So you’ve got a sample hanging around that breaks you out? Or just some empty lip balm or eye cream pots – empty them! It will save you running out to buy the following:
Travel bottles/tubs: If all else fails, run out and get yourself some travel pots. I got mine from boots for £3 (two tubes, two posts and a scooping device which is super helpful when decanting moisturiser!)
Et voila! My skincare filled the clear case above perfectly. Now if I could just learn to downsize my travel wardrobe that would be perfect… Tips anyone?
I can't offer any tips as I'm hopeless at downsizing when it comes to packing for travelling, so I hear ya, girl. I don't think I do too badly with clothes though. I try to pack items that I can mix and match, so a lot of tops and skirts, so you still get some variation.
Skincare and makeup is just so hard though! Of course, no one needs that much, but us beauty junkies sure do! You get so accustomed to your routine and what works well for your skin. I honestly think my beauty products end up taking up more room in my suitcase than my clothes do. :p

It is so annoying if some products never come in travelsize but those little pots are very handy

I've just started using the Lush Ultrabland face cleanser. It's a great travel product as it does everything: removes eye makeup, cleanses and leaves your face feeling moisturised. Hopefully that will lighten my bag a tiny bit 🙂 xx

I really need to become a better packer, it's skincare and nail products that I struggle with, do I really need 10 different nail colours for a week away, probably not haha 🙂

Happy travels! I loved this post, Suzie, yet, then again – I love all of your posts. They're so unique!

I happen to be such a light packer that I often end up with not enough clothes for my trip and the result is me feeling mangy. You seemed to do well enough ! Enjoy your weekend !

I just had my get away holiday and I actually did the same!

I am trying to get better at my travel skincare packing. Great advice on the saving little pots to decant into! Must remember to do that. I tend to save shampoo sachets from magazines and little gift with purchase skincare to take away. Its so hard not to over pack. I need to be more strict!

Hello i follow your blog now, i love it!

I love nothing more than miniature versions of products! Primark do some pretty good travel bottle sets for just £1 which I always stock up on before going away x

I never pack properly, even if its just for a one night stay somewhere i'll throw everything i own into a bag or two x
I had my first weekend away packing success last week! I went to London for two days and manage to restrain myself and not take the whole bathroom cupboard with me! My secret was that travelling kit you can buy at Primark! I poured some micelles solution into the bottle, some of my creamy cleanser into the little pot and that already save so much space! Small sized Clinique DDML, Hydraluron, a toner and I was good to go!
Now, I can see it in the picture you've got the La Roche Posay FPS. I have it too but it is a nightmare for me! I cannot put anything under or over it because it just peels off of my face! Does that ever happen to you? What is your technique with this one? Cause I swear, I need a game plan to use this! haha xx

very good post!!! 🙂 xx
I always love taking samples of products with me. The little sachets are the best to just slip in a travel makeup bag.
I also love saving samples pots to pop my full-sized products in.

I'm great with packing clothes, but when comes to skincare and makeup, I'm so bad at it.I need to make sure to keep this in mind for next time!

I am packing-challenged too! I always bring more than I need. These are great tips and I'm taking notes for my next weekend trip!
Downsizing your travel wardrobe is a big toughie, at least downsizing make-up and skincare is easier! Never thought about the empty products idea, I'm going to hunt out an empty tin of Vaseline and fill it with moisturiser to take away, genius! Thank you!

This is the main reason I love mini products and samples so much. I love being able to travel light, and those little pots and bottles are such a good idea, might have to pick some of those up!
